Cosmos
Lightness, with a little wildness.
Fine stems and open faces bring breathing room to an arrangement. Our reference flower has white petals brushed with pink around a bright yellow centre.
- Colour
- White and pink in this reference
- Form
- Open face, fine stem
The reference resembles Cosmos bipinnatus. The wider Cosmos genus includes flowers with different colours and forms: the dark blooms in our archive are visually identified as chocolate cosmos.

Water
Keep the cut ends submerged, with foliage above the waterline; check the level daily.
Cut
Use a clean, sharp blade to make a fresh cut without crushing the stem.
Refresh
Check the level daily; wash the vase and refresh the water every 2–3 days, sooner if cloudy.
Vase life
3–5 days
The essentials
Stem & leaves
Slender, delicate stems. Remove every leaf that would sit below the waterline.
Placement
A cool indoor position away from direct sun, radiators and strong draughts.
Freshness
Choose unbruised petals and firm stems. Avoid flowers already shedding petals.
Opening
Harvest stage matters. Tight immature buds may disappoint, while old open flowers can shed quickly.
Problems & fixes
Petals fall very quickly
The flower may have been harvested late or handled roughly.
Remove fading heads, handle remaining stems gently and choose fresher flowers next time.
Stems bend or heads wilt
Water stress, damage or ageing can cause collapse.
Refresh the water and recut intact stems. Remove crushed or deteriorating stems.
Water becomes cloudy
Submerged foliage and decaying stems can foul the water.
Clean the vase and remove all foliage below water before refilling.

Origin

What it loves.
A light counterpoint to dense focal flowers.
Avoid: Hiding the fine stems in a tightly packed mass of large flowers.
The small open faces and fine stems give dense dahlia heads breathing room; this pairing appears in our archive.
An open cosmos face softens the calla’s smooth, sculptural line.
Grasses
Fine lines repeat the movement of the cosmos stems.
Vase
A small-neck vase or a supported arrangement with room between stems.
Style
Loose, airy, asymmetric.
Start with
3–7 stems
A starting point for a small vase; branching stems may carry several flowers.
